Your numbers
Tools, writers, agency: everything you spend on SEO a month.
Search Console's clicks are the best source.
Visitors who buy or sign up. 1% to 3% is common.
Average order, or lifetime value for subscriptions.
Use 100% to see revenue instead of profit.
Return on investment, per month
1,355%
Each dollar spent brings back 14.5 dollars of profit.
- New customers
- 30
- Revenue
- $2,400
- Profit
- $1,440
- SEO cost
- − $99
- Net gain per month
- $1,341
You break even at 104 extra visitors a month.
SEO results build over months, and most pages keep bringing visitors after you stop paying for them. A month that loses money early can still be a good investment.
How the calculator works
- Customers
- Extra visitors times your conversion rate.
- Profit
- Customers times the value of a customer, times your margin.
- ROI
- Profit minus SEO cost, divided by SEO cost. 100% means you doubled your money.
- Break-even
- The visitors needed for profit to equal what you spend.
Getting good numbers
- Visitors from Search Console
- Compare clicks from organic search now with clicks before you started. Count only the increase.
- Conversion rate from analytics
- Use the rate for organic visitors if your analytics shows it; it often differs from paid traffic.
- Lifetime value for subscriptions
- A customer paying $30 a month for 12 months is worth $360, not $30.
- Look at a year, not a month
- Articles keep ranking for years. Compare twelve months of cost with twelve months of gain.

(Profit from organic traffic − SEO cost) ÷ SEO cost × 100. Profit is extra visitors × conversion rate × customer value × margin.
Anything above 0% pays for itself. Because pages keep bringing visitors for years, SEO often ends up with a higher return than ads, but it takes longer to start.
Usually six to twelve months for a new content program, as pages take three to six months to reach their position and traffic compounds after that.
Use leads instead of sales: the share of visitors who contact you, times the share of leads that become customers, times what a customer is worth.
