What it counts
- Words
- Every run of letters or numbers. “E-mail” and “don't” count as one word, as in Word and Google Docs.
- Characters
- Everything you typed, with and without spaces. An emoji or an accented letter counts as one.
- Sentences and paragraphs
- Sentences end with . ! ? or a line break; a paragraph is any line with text on it.
- Reading and speaking time
- At 228 words a minute for silent reading and 150 for speaking.
Common lengths
- Blog posts
- Long enough to answer the question fully. Look at the pages that rank for your keyword rather than a fixed number.
- Essays and assignments
- Check your teacher's limit; most count words the way this counter does.
- Talks and videos
- About 150 words fill a minute of speaking, so a 5-minute talk is around 750 words.
- Product descriptions
- Short enough to read at a glance, often 50 to 300 words, with the key facts first.
