What the scores mean
- 90 to 100
- Very easy: short sentences and words a 10-year-old reads easily.
- 60 to 70
- Plain English: what most web writing should aim for.
- 30 to 50
- Hard: academic and legal writing. Fine for experts, slow for everyone else.
- Grade level
- The US school year a reader needs to follow the text on first reading. Grade 8 suits most readers.
How to make text easier
- Split long sentences
- One idea per sentence. Most sentences over 25 words read better as two.
- Choose short words
- “Use” for “utilize”, “help” for “facilitate”. Keep the precise terms your readers expect.
- Lead with the answer
- Put the point first and the detail after. Readers and AI answers both pick up the opening line.
- Break up the page
- Headings, short paragraphs and lists make the same words easier to scan.
